The Center for the Arts
Genre: Rock, Blues Description Eric Johnson is widely recognized as one of the most extraordinary instrumentalists in rock over the past four decades. A Texas guitar legend long before his first album, he earned early comparisons to Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix, and his fusion band Electromagnets was hailed as “the Mahavishnu Orchestra of Texas.” His 1986 debut Tones earned a Grammy nomination and marked the emergence of a fully formed guitar visionary. Johnson’s follow-up, the platinum-selling Ah Via Musicom, featured the Grammy Award–winning instrumental “Cliffs of Dover,” cementing him as an international guitar phenomenon. Rolling Stone named him among the 100 Greatest Guitarists, while critics have praised his playing as “vibrant” and “more real than life.” Across 17 solo albums — plus collaborations with Mike Stern, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai — Johnson has amassed eight Grammy nominations, major industry honors, and repeated recognition in guitar magazines worldwide. His recent years have included major tours such as G3 Reunion, Backroads Blues Festival, and the Experience Hendrix tours of 2024–2025. Blending rock, blues, jazz, fusion, soul, folk, new-age, classical, and country, Johnson continues to pursue what he calls the heart of his work: “It really boils down to the music and the song at the end of the day.”
