The Center for the Arts
Genre: Singer- Songwriter, Americana, Folk For over three decades, Grammy Award winner Iris DeMent has been one of America’s most revered singer-songwriters. With a voice John Prine described as “like you’ve heard, but not really” and melodies rooted in gospel, hymns, and classic country, her music has graced film (True Grit), television (The Leftovers), and the voices of fellow artists. Her debut album, Infamous Angel, was recently named one of the “greatest country albums of all time” by Rolling Stone, and two of her subsequent albums earned GRAMMY nominations. Recognized with the Americana Music Trailblazer Award, DeMent continues to offer songs that feel like prayers—raw, unflinching, and full of grace. On her latest album, Workin’ On A World, DeMent turns her songwriting into a powerful act of healing. Facing the turmoil of our times—climate crisis, social injustice, division—she doesn’t just ask how we keep going; she urges us to keep loving. With 13 anthems for our broken inner and outer worlds, she extends a hand, inviting us to join the “warriors of love” in building something better.
